PURPOSE:To lower the minimum operating voltage by setting a hold pulse voltage lower than an address pulse voltage within a range wherein the illumination state in an address period can be maintained and specifying a duty ratio. CONSTITUTION:The voltage waveform 1-a of a pulse applied to the electrode of a scanning-side (l)th row is so determined that the hold pulse voltage VH is lower than the address pulse voltage VO and the duty ratio of the hold pulse is >=50%. When a pulse voltage waveform 1-b is applied to the electrode of a data-side (m)th array, the intersection cell (l, m) is driven with a driving waveform 1-C. When the pulse voltage is thus applied, the minimum operating voltage can not be made high in margin below a 50% duty ratio, but can be lowered by setting the duty ratio to >=50%.
