A gain-coupled distributed feedback semiconductor laser device includes regions disposed with a predetermined period in an active layer or a cladding layer on the active layer in such a manner that perturbation in distribution of carriers injected into the active layer may be produced, which results in perturbation in gain coefficient without increasing internal loss, whereby single-longitudinal-mode oscillation facilitating gain coupling is available.
