Agent (I) is copolymer of butadiene, acrylonitrile, styrene, and (meth)acrylate is combination (of at least 2 of these monomers), contg. self-crosslinking gps. Pref. (I) is styrene copolymer, partic. a carboxylated styrene-acrylate (II) or styrene-butadiene copolymer. (I) is self-crosslinking at 130-250 deg.C. (I) is aq. dispersion contg. at least 40, pref. 85-99.5 wt.% water. (I) contains mineral oil-based additive for binding dust, partic. in ratio oil:(I) 5:1-1:5, esp. 2:1. USE/ADVANTAGE - Impregnating mineral fibres at 0.1-2, pref. 0.2-1, wt.% on wt. of fibres partic. for use for insulating purposes. (I) is silicone-free, artificial mineral fibres can be simply and effectively impregnated permanently by (I) together with dust-binding agents, smoothing agents, and lubricants, and impregnated materials do not readily absorb water, so retaining insulating efficiency. In an example, a homogeneous emulsion was prepd. from 5 l Experimental Latex Dispersion XZ 947.40.00 (TM: dispersion, solids content 46.6%, of a (II)) and 4.8 kg mineral oil by mixing for 10-15 minutes, opt. with warming at up to 50 deg.C. Emulsion was then diluted with water to 2%. In prepn. of glass fibres by jet blasting, the diluted emulsion was sprayed onto the glass fibre jet such that the (I) concn. was 0.3% (oil 0.2%, copolymer 0.1%) on the fibres, the fibres being cooled to under 200 deg.C and (II) immediately crosslinking. Testpieces 500 X 500 X 40 mm thick were prepd., having apparent density 24.4 kg/m3, from the impregnated fibres. In water uptake tests involving flotation, immersion, or dipping into water, the samples proved sufficiently hydrophobic.
