The present invention utilizes a primary chute traversing the multiple floors of a building and diverts waste to a plurality of receptacles at the lower level; and in alternative embodiments, a variety of diversion techniques are disclosed. In one embodiment involving centrally positioned receptacles, secondary chutes are arranged to carry waste laterally from the primary chute to the selected receptacles, and a diverting partition directs the waste from the primary chute to the selected secondary chute. In a second embodiment a flexible secondary chute is connected to the primary chute and is moved by control means to position its outlet at the selected receptacles. In a third embodiment, the receptacles are linearly positioned along a laterally oriented secondary chute or conveyor, and diverting partitions are employed there along to redirect the waste to selected receptacles. In all embodiments operator control is provided at the floor access to the primary chute to divert the waste to the selected receptacle.
