Process for reduction of the nitrogenous pollution of the effluents with a high concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen, such as liquid manure. The effluent to be treated is subjected successively to a biological denitrification operation in the absence of oxygen and then to a biological nitrification operation carried out by aeration of the effluent and, during these two operations, the residual nitrate concentration is adjusted to values of between 0 and 6 g/l.
