A belt conveyor for bulk material has a conveying path with a horizontal section in a fixed location and a vertical section in a movable location and comprises a base belt (1) in both sections and a cover belt (2) in the vertical section. The base belt is guided away from the conveying path in the region of a transition section between the vertical and horizontal sections so that the conveyed material (3) is discharged from the base belt and moves over a short path following a ballistic curve. Subsequently, the material is guided from the vertical to the horizontal direction, or from the horizontal to the vertical direction, by a redirecting belt (13) arranged in the form of a quadrant of a circle. Thereafter, the material, again following a short path of a ballistic curve, is picked up again by the base belt (1).
