Polluted gas is cleaned and/or hot gas is cooled, in a method in which the gas is contacted with a finely-divided liquid so as to scrub particles or absorb gaseous pollutants from the gas, or cool the gas. The liquid is applied in a number of umbrella-like shells (hollow-cone sprays) or linear curtains (flat-set sprays) in two or more planes perpendicular to the main flow direction of the gas. Pref. the velocity component of the liquid in a plane perpendicular to the gas flow direction is more than velocity component parallel to that direction. The liquid sprays are arranged so as to alternately spread and concentrate the gas along planes perpendicular to the gas flow direction, with the distance between adjacent rows of jets being insufficient to allow redistribution of the gas flow. Pref. the jets at a given position are arranged to act on a plane where the gas has been concentrated by the action of the jets immediately upstream. Pref. no substantial interaction takes place between droplets arising from adjacent rows of jets. |
