PURPOSE:To read a display correctly and to recover electric power of a portable power supply and to display with high brightness for a long time by providing the time for putting out lights shorter than the lighting time for the prescribed interval in the case of driving a display section. CONSTITUTION:When a display mode is static, a driving section 2 provides the time for putting out lights shorter than the lighting time during the prescribed interval in the case of driving a display section 1. For instance, during the driving section 2 repeats scanning of transferring dot information of display data existing in the row to the display section 1 scanning successively 16 rows, display data is invalidated for 0.5sec. every 4.5sec. in which dot information of display data selected is transferred, and the display data is displayed with a period of 5sec. Since it can be performed by lengthening the lighting time to increase brightness in each scanning, putting out lights and brightness variation can be controlled independently. Also, if necessary, voltage of a power supply section 3 is monitored, and brightness is increased by widening scan pulse width according to reduction of voltage.
