The invention relates to a press for compressing items 1 containing liquid substance so as to separate the liquid substance from the said items, which press comprises a tube-like press chamber 2, a movable press ram 3 and an opposing surface 4 against which the ram 3 presses the items 1 to be compressed. The opposing surface 4 has been arranged such that it is movable transversely to the motional direction of the press ram 3. The opposing surface 4 has been provided with a control element 6 disposed outside the press chamber 2. When the press ram 3 applies a force to the opposing surface 4, the control element 6 has been arranged to give way so that the opposing surface 4, in the direction of the motion of the press ram 3, is pressed against the supporting surfaces 7, which are fixed with respect to the press chamber 2 and are situated outside the path of motion of the ram 3. <IMAGE>
