PURPOSE:To reduce black smoke and particulates by activating diffuse combustion, particularly in the latter period of combustion, of a direct injection diesel engine by collision of air and combustion gas in a combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:In an ordinary direct injection diesel engine, a combustion chamber is formed in a top surface of a piston, but in this invention, main combustion chambers 21 are set up in valve pocket sides of a cylinder head 15, and further a small subcombustion chamber 22 is formed in a side of the top surface of the piston 12, so as to further form a flame collision part 23 by throttling an inlet part of this subcombustion chamber 22.
