The automatic transmission control (24) uses a sensor (30) providing a signal representing a monitored operating parameter, used to address a transmission switching data table providing the required transmission ratio. The data obtained from the stored table is combined with the sensor signal to provide a transmission control signal, used to select the correct gear, with visual indication of the selected gear. The transmission control has a mode selector providing an automatic mode signal, or a driver mode signal, allowing the transmission switching data to be obtained from a standard switching data table, or a drive switching data signal which is freely programmable by the driver.
