A resorbable surgical material is formed by a regenerated cellulose thread onto which are fixed enzymes which can degrade it under the conditions of the human or animal body. The enzymes are cellulases, and the duration of resorption can be varied according to the type and amt. of enzymes initially fixed. The thread may have a colour which leaves no trace in the medium when the thread is resorbed. A resorbable surgical material is obtd. by preparing a thread of regenerated cellulose by the viscose method, treating the thread with an enzyme compsn., pref. at 0-10 deg. C and pH 4-6, to cause adsorption of the enzymes by the thread, during the thread, pref. by lyophilisation, and sterilising, pref. by gamma ray treatment. USE/ADVANTAGE - The speed of degradation can be controlled, and it is not necessary to use a different thread for each type of application. Use of the thread as a suture is claimed.
