The invention relates to a device and control for forming non-circular surfaces on workpieces, in particular a machining unit for piston manufacture. The machining unit is designed as an additional axis on account of special demands on the dynamics and has an electric-motor drive and a hydrostatic bearing arrangement. The device according to the invention with machining unit is especially suitable in combination with vertical boring and turning mills, it being possible to accommodate more than one tool edge.
