PURPOSE:To equidistantly thin a pattern from the background side and to obtain a distance image that has the smallest distance value from the background with a line thinning processor which thins a binary pattern by one layer from the background side to convert the pattern into a line graphic of the width of a single picture element and also to obtain a distance image. CONSTITUTION:The edges of an input image are detected by the 1st and 2nd peripheral point detecting means 102 and 103, and the erasion of picture elements is decided by a 1st erasion deciding means 105. At the same time, the edge positions are corrected by a peripheral point correcting means 107 and a 2nd erasion deciding means 109 decides the erasion of picture elements to the corrected edge positions. Meanwhile a distance converting means 111 updates the distance value for the inside points of a pattern. Therefore the pattern is evenly thinned and a line thinned image of high quality is obtained. At the same time, a distance image having the smallest distance value from the background is obtained with high accuracy.
