PURPOSE: To enable a smooth horizontal movement of picture-in-picture(PIP) over the whole display of 16×9 under remote control. CONSTITUTION: A video display has a wide format display ratio and is synchronized with a 1st video signal expressing a 1st picture. A PIP processor 301 responds to a 2nd video signal, expressing a 2nd picture which specifies a subordinate picture, sized smaller than the display. A FIFO line memory 354 stores the continuous lines of video information expressing the subordinate picture, and these lines are combined with certain continuous lines in video information expressing the 1st picture. A counter, to be initialized at a time corresponding to the start of respective horizontal lines in the 1st video signal, generates variable time delay. After the variable time delay, a FIFO control circuit starts the transfer of lines in the video information expressing the subordinate picture to be combined with video information expressing a main picture from the line memory. The variable time delay determines one of plural horizontal pan positions of subordinate picture over the full surface of video display.
