PURPOSE:To simplify the structure and conduct infrared image pickup at low cost by providing a phthalocyanine photoconductive layer on inner facing surface of electrode plates having a plurality of zone electrodes and holding a liquid crystal layer inside. CONSTITUTION:On the inner facing surfaces of transparent electrode plates 2a and 2b arranged in parallel in an imaging element 1, a plurality of transparent zone electrodes 3a and 3b are provided. Also on the inner facing surface of the plate 2a, a phthalocyanine photoelectro conductive layer 5 which changes the resistivity by incident light 8 in a particular wave length region, is provided. The oriented layers 6a and 6b of liquid crystal molecules are deposited on the photo.conductive layer 5 and the inner facing surface of the plate 2b, respectively, and in between them, a liquid crystal layer 7 is held. For writing a light image, the light image is projected on the photoconductive layer 5 and a low frequency voltage is impressed at the same time to arrange liquid crystal molecules. For reading the light image, the electrode 3a and 3b are scanned in turn and high frequency voltage is impressed, and then, the impedances of individual images incurred by the rearranging of liquid crystal molecules are output as time sequential electric signals.
