A postal letter sorting system feeds letters continuously past an optical detector (6). Associated with the main image detecting process is a further detector (8) that identifies a coding block, either horizontally or vertically positioned on the surface of the letter. When in the vertical position, the block information is rotated through ninety degrees and is then superimposed upon the main letter display on a screen.
