PURPOSE: To reduce insufficient sealing stress and gasket damage by adjusting the thickness of various gasket components by means of shims to obtain an optimum load balance between seals. CONSTITUTION: A dual coating system is utilized for a cylinder head gasket of an internal combustion engine. A lubricous, high temperature coating 35 is located at combustion seals 28 while an elastomeric coating 42 is located at fluid flow openings 24. The coatings are applied to entire sides of plates 32, 34 in such a manner that the coatings do not have to be selectively applied to, or masked off from any one particularly layer.
