A vehicle parking brake device including a means for eliminating the slack in the brake cable (322) comprises a lever (306), an adjusting ratchet (310) and an adjusting spring (320) returning the ratchet (310) in rotation. The device comprises an improved locking means for initially keeping the adjusting ratchet (310) in a locked state, in order to allow the cable (322) to be connected to the adjusting ratchet. The locking means comprises either a locking pin or a locking spring (300), or else a locking pawl. The locking means is automatically deactivated when the tension in the cable (322) exceeds the tension offered by the adjusting spring means (320) in order to allow the device to reengage. <IMAGE>
