A method of replacing parts of a safety mechanism of a motor vehicle involves checking a deceleration signal w.r.t. a replacement threshold higher than that used to trigger the safety device. The replacement threshold is selected so that when it is exceeded there is a danger of the safety mechanism being damaged by the large corresp. deceleration. When the replacement threshold is exceeded at least one part is replaced. When only the triggering threshold is exceeded the part is used again. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method enables parts of the safety mechanism to be re-used following an accident without reducing the safety of the system.
