PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst which has a high activity at an effective temp. or higher in industrial processes and gives a polymer with a high mol. wt. and a homogeneous quality by compounding a specific transition metal compd. and a cocatalyst. CONSTITUTION:A polymn. catalyst is obtd. by compounding a transition metal compd. of formula I and a cocatalyst. In formula I, M is a metal selected from metals of Groups 3-10 of the Periodic Table, lanthanoids, and actinoids; L is a group of formula II; A, B and C are each an element selected from elements of Groups 13, 14, 15, and 16 of the Periodic Table; n is 0-10; R<1>, R<2>, and R<3> are each H, halogen, an org. metalloid group, alkoxy, etc.; a, b, and c are each 0-3; d is an integer of 1 or higher provided it is not higher than the valence of M; X is a ligand having conjugated pi electrons; e is 0 or 1; Y is a ligand froming sigma bonds or a chelating ligand; f>=o; Z is a Lewis base; and g is 0-4.
