The device is equipped with a storage device for recording unprocessed sheets, with a storage device, arranged in parallel with the first-mentioned storage device, for storing processed sheets, and with a sheet processing unit for carrying out recording or reading processing of information which is to be recorded or is recorded on a sheet. The sheet processing unit comprises an optical unit for performing an optical scan for reading or recording in a main scanning direction of the sheet, which unit is arranged vertically and parallel between the said sheet storage devices. The sheet processing unit contains a sheet transport mechanism in order to transport an unprocessed sheet from the first-mentioned storage device to the sheet processing unit and for guiding a processed sheet from the sheet processing unit to the last-mentioned storage device. The sheet processing unit performs processing on a sheet which is pulled off the storage device as unprocessed sheet by the sheet transport mechanism and it performs processing on a sheet which is stored as processed sheet in its storage device.
