Process for producing a smokable tobacco product

To develop a novel smokable tobacco product, the following process steps are proposed: a) producing a mixed composition of tobacco particles, starch or a starch-containing product as binder and additives; b) the mixed composition is compressed and plasticised in an extruder by thermal and mechanical energy input; c) in the course of this, pressurised steam is forced through the mixed composition to form channels; d) on exit from the extruder, the plasticised mixed composition made porous by the flow channels is expanded or foamed by drop in temperature and pressure, is solidified as a continuous, porous, cylindrical rod and cut off into desired lengths.
