PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal element which prevents the degradation in a memory characteristic and gradation characteristic by a counter electric field and can make high-speed response by large spontaneous polarization. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal element is constituted by clamping a liquid crystal 105 having a chiral smectic phase between substrates 101 and 101' having transparent electrodes 102, 102' on at least one of the substrates. The liquid crystal element described above is provided with reversible oxidation and reduction reaction layers 103, 103' between at least one of the liquid crystals and the electrodes. |
