The invention relates to a heat exchanger, used in conjunction with hot water heating systems, for treating surface water, which has a battery (coil) located inside a water container. In order to be able to produce the surface water with little energy and, in addition, largely legionella-free, the invention proposes to use the battery for the purpose of leading the surface water through, to feed the hot water to the water container, to one side of the water container, and to draw it off on the opposite side, specifically such that the water of the water container, on the one hand, and the surface water in the battery, on the other hand, are guided in counterflow.
