PURPOSE:To provide a plastic optical fiber which is small in transmission loss, well transmits light entering a core material, increases a practicably usable fiber length and allows the light to uniformly and effectively leak from the side face of the optical fiber by forming the whole or the desired part of the clad thickness of a core-clad type plastic optical fiber consisting of the core material and clad material to have a small specified thickness. CONSTITUTION:This plastic optical fiber consists of the core material and clad material having high transparency and allows the light to leak from the whole or the desired part of the side face of the optical fiber. The clad thickness of the whole or the desired part to allow the light to leak is specified to 0.1 to 2mum. This optical fiber is of a plastic system and its structure is preferably a step index type multimode optical fiber having stepwise changing refractive indices. A polymethyl methacrylate resin, etc., are used as the blank to constitute the core material and materials having the refractive index smaller than the refractive index of the core material are used as the clad material. |
