The invention in question deals with a permanently illuminated signal sign 1 for emergency exits. Normally, signal signs are illuminated with short-lived light sources, such as incandescent bulbs or fluorescent tubes. In order to avoid the often repeated servicing work which these light sources require, a totally new solution has been developed. In the present invention, the illumination of the signal sign 1 is implemented by means of light-emitting diodes 6. The light-emitting diodes are used to depict the desired figure 8 on the surface of the sign. The light-emitting diodes 6 are placed in holes 3 made in a backing layer 2. They are secured by their base to the backside 4 of the backing layer, so that they will illuminate the front side 7 of the backing layer 2, i.e., the signal sign. <IMAGE>
