The bistable solenoid has an electromagnetic circuit and a permanent-magnet circuit, an armature which can be displaced between two limit positions, a spring which acts on the armature and holds it in a first limit position, and a winding which forms part of the electromagnetic circuit, and though which current can be passed in one direction or the other in order to displace the armature. When the armature is located in a first limit position and current is flowing through the winding, the flux which is produced by permanent magnets initially runs as a shunt path to the flux which is produced electromagnetically, while, if the armature is displaced in the direction of the second limit position, the flux which is produced by the permanent magnet and the electromagnetic flux are connected in series, with the said shunt path no longer being present, and form a common flux. In the second limit position, the armature is held only by permanent magnets, when no current is flowing through the winding. <IMAGE>
