Impact-protection device for a motor vehicle

The invention relates to an impact-protection device for a motor vehicle, in particular in the passenger area. An essential constituent part of the said impact-protection device (1) is an air bag (2) which can be inflated by a gas generator and is arranged behind an instrument-panel shroud (10). The latter exhibits, for its part, an opening region which is predetermined by predetermined tear lines (12) and is produced when the air bag (2) is filled. In order to avoid a flap which is not very attractive to look at, it is proposed to integrate the covering of the air bag (2) into the instrument-panel shroud (5). This takes place according to the invention in that, in order to produce at least one border line of the opening region, a groove-like depression is integrally formed in the instrument-panel shroud (5), which depression, for its part, is fixed in a carrier arrangement (instrument-panel carrier 5, carrier casing 3) by a clamping or pinch connection. This type of connection restricts the tear-open action of the air bag covering formed by the instrument-panel shroud. After the accident, the connection is opened, the torn-open instrument-panel shroud is cut out using a knife and the resulting hole is closed off by a "repair cover" (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
