The invention relates to a prefabricated thatched-roof unit (35) comprising a multiplicity of mutually parallel stalks (50) of reeds or the like which are connected to produce a transportable sheet-like roof element (52), to a process and an apparatus for producing such prefabricated thatched-roof units (35), and to a process for fitting the prefabricated thatched-roof units (35) on a roof structure. In order to avoid leakages in the region of the joints of adjacent prefabricated thatched-roof units (35), the invention proposes that the stalks (50) be connected releasably to one another in the region of the lateral borders, parallel to the longitudinal direction of the stalks (50), of the roof element (52), with the result that, when the prefabricated unit is fitted, the stalks (50) arranged therein can be interconnected with stalks (50) which are arranged in the region of a lateral border of a corresponding adjacent prefabricated unit (35). A water-impermeable substrate material can thus be dispensed with, so that good climatic living conditions can be produced, which are comparable with those of thatched-roof coverings of the conventional design. In this arrangement, the releasable connection is preferably produced with the aid of a binding wire (36a) which rests against the lateral stalks (50) from the outside and holds these together during the transportation of the prefabricated units (35). <IMAGE>
