The subject matter of the invention is a method for determining the octane number of a fuel, using an analysis system comprising an internal-combustion engine. This method is characterised in that it consists in calibrating the system to atmospheric pressure and with respect to a reference fuel, in adjusting the height of the cylinder of the engine in order to obtain a height which is compensated on the basis of the calibration, establishing a detonation intensity set-point for the compensated cylinder height, determining a basic fuel/air ratio by adjusting the fuel/air ratio in the carburettor until the said set-point is reached, determining a cylinder height factor by adjusting the height of the cylinder until the said set-point is reached, while supplying fuel to the carburettor in a basic fuel/air ratio, and calculating the octane number of the fuel according to the height factor of the cylinder and the basic fuel/air ratio.
