A drive unit (2) is used to drive a driving shaft (1) in a weaving machine. Control signals (i1) for the drive unit are generated in a control unit (4). The drive unit is designed in such a way that, depending on these control signals, it allows a variable non-stopping rotational movement during a revolution of the drive element. The drive unit (2) can work, during a corresponding revolution, as a direct-current motor or as a direct-current generator. When the unit works as a motor, a mains supply feeds energy to the motor. During the phase working as a direct-current generator, the drive unit feeds energy back into the mains supply (5). <IMAGE>
