The steering column tubular body (10) has a support (11), comprising two mountings (12,13), connected to the bodywork. The clamping system comprises two clamping legs (8,9), each part of the corresponding mounting, located on each side of the tubular body. Two V-clamps (50,51) are located between one of the mountings and the tubular body with the two faces of the V applied against the body. During adjustment of steering column inclination each V-clamp follows the movement of the body, sliding along the support wall (52,53) of the corresponding clamping leg. An angular guide for each V clamp in the corresponding mounting consists of a guide pin, carried by the external face (54,55) of each V, which penetrates in a slot in the corresponding clamping foot.
