The appliance has a fixed, hollow finger base element (2) and finger element(s) (3,4) which are made of U-shaped profiled sheet metal plates with bridge-pieces pointing in the direction of travel. Between the arms of the U shaped plates are plastics filler pieces partly filling the inner rectangular cross section. Link connections are positioned on the ends of the filler pieces. The link chain has plastics links (12) joined by hinge-type connections. The part of the link chain leading through the finger base element is in the form of a length-adjustable tie-rod (11). The link chain has an end-piece (15) swivelling with the last finger element (4) on a link bolt (16) on an axis in the finger-pair`s (1) direction of movement.
