PURPOSE: To use a specific phthaloylhydrazide derivative or its pharmaceutically permissible salt as an active component of an anti-hypoxic and defensive agent by administrating their specific amount. CONSTITUTION: This phthaloylhydrazide derivative of the formula or its pharmaceutically permissible salt in an amount of 1-300 mg per 1 kg of body weight is administered to use as an anti-hypoxic and defensive agent. The compound of the formula, e.g. 2,3-dihydrophthalazine-1,4-dione, 5-amino-2,3- dihydrophthalazine-1,2dione, a salt of the 5-amino-2,3-dihydrophthalazine-1,2-dione, 4,5-amino-2,3-dihydrophthalazine-1,2-dione or 4-methyl-4,5-diamino-2,3- dihydrophthalazine-1,2-dione exhibits an extreme pharmacological activity. When the compound is administered in the above dose, anti-hypoxic and defensive action eliminating an effect due to excessive leukocyte activity is exhibited and can especially be used to cure infarct and inhibit a rejective reaction in an implantation.
