CROSS-LINKED ANION EXCHANGE PARTICLE AND ITS PREPARATION

PURPOSE: To obtain a new bite acid sequestrant polymer composition and to provide a method for preparing the polymer in a specific shape, especially in a spherical shape. CONSTITUTION: This polymer particle is pre-pared by cross-linking an amine- containing polymer with a polyfunctional amine reactive compound in an amount enough to cross-link the polymer so as to make the polymer substantially water- insoluble and have bile acid sequestering efficacy greater than preferably about 3-fold that of cholestyramine. A preferable method for polymerization involves suspension polymerization of a water-soluble amine-containing monomer such as a dialkylaminoalkyl (meth)acrylate, a dialkylaminoalkyl (meth)acrylamide and a polyfunctional amine reactive compound such as a substituted dihaloalkane. A medicinal composition contains a bile acid sequestrant polymer particle. A blood cholesterol level is lowered by using the medicinal composition.
