A non-magnetic substrate (11) for use in a magnetic head (10), consists of the basic composition consisting of CoO and NiO or NiO, and (a) from 0.1 to 7% by weight of ZrO2 and HfO2 based on 100% of the basic composition, or (b) from 0.1 to 7% by weight of ZrO2, and from 0.1 to 2% by weight of Al2O3. Cracking of the magnetic-layer structure is prevented.
