A process for stunning an animal for slaughter comprises applying a stunning voltage of 250-350 V using AC with a frequency 50 - 1500 s<-1> or pulsating DC with a frequency 100 - 1500 s<-1> at the contact electrodes. Also claimed is an appts. which delivers the stunning voltages as AC or pulsating DC as above.
