Height control for e.g. hang gliders without relying on thermal currents

The pilot's weight hangs below the wing on an elastic suspension. In normal gliding flight, the elastics are extended and part of the pilot's weight rests on the bar of the trapeze. To gain height, the pilot presses lightly on the bar, releasing the tension in the suspension and reducing the downward load on the wing. The reduced load allows the wing to gain height.
