The number to be worn by a competitor in sports, or members of a sports team, is formed by an assembly (3) from a supple tubular film material (1) which is advanced step-by-step by twice the length (H) required for the number. When halted, the assembly (3) works the flat material simultaneously with two lateral cut lines (6,7) displaced from each other by twice the length (H) of the number, and two curved lines (8,9) flanking a centre opening (10). The two remaining sections (12,13) between the centre opening (10) and the side curved cuts (8,9) are sliced along their centre lines. The tubular material is a polyethylene film, or other recyclable thermowelding film material.
