PURPOSE:To provide a microwave excited light source suitable for uniform linear or panel illumination. CONSTITUTION:This is a microwave excited light source equipped with a microwave power source 11, a rectangular waveguide tube 12 for introducing the microwaves outputted from the microwave source 11, and an electrodeless lamp 14 for generating induction discharge by the microwaves introduced into the rectangular waveguide tube 12 and emitting light. A multiplex mode converter 10, which converts the fundamental mode into TE waves consisting of the fundamental mode and higher-order modes is provided between the rectangular tube 12 and a lamp chamber 13, and the microwave source 11 and the rectangular waveguide tube 13 and the multiplex mode converter 10 an the lamp chamber 13 are connected electrically.
