Rear roof rail 103 is formed as a box section, and is stiffened at each joint with C pillar 102 by diagonal internal stiffeners 13a, 6a. The overall construction comprises: roof panel 15; roof rail outer member 11; projection 13a from hinge stiffener 13 (fig. 1); projection 6a from C pillar stiffener 6 (fig. 1); and projection 3a from rear inner panel 3 (fig. 4). a, b, and c represent spot welds. The connection between the rear pillar and the roof rail therefore has increased stiffness against external loads applied on the corners of the roof rail box section, and also against twisting. <IMAGE>
