The fuel cells have a pair of flat plate electrodes (5,6) separated by an electrolyte matrix (6). The plate-electrolyte assembly is enclosed by two gas distribution plates (3,10). An outer cover (1,12) encloses the cell.A strip (7) of a sealing material is placed between an electrode and the electrolyte matrix, extending round the periphery of the cell. The sealing strip is made of an elastomer reinforced with woven fibres. The strip is supple, resistant to extrusion effects and resistant to degradation. The preferred material is a butyl rubber, reinforced with glass fibres. This is suitable for use in an alkaline fuel cell operating between 60 and 80 deg C. |
