PURPOSE: To provide a system and a method for inserting a device into a network at appropriate transmission speed without interrupting a data flow in the plural transmission rates digital data communication network. CONSTITUTION: An intelligent multi-station access unit having a transmission speed detection circuit 36 judging the data transmission speed of a connection device which is to acquire the access of the plural transmission rates digital data communication network to a node 18 is provided. The unit is provided with the speed detection circuit 36 instructing the data transmission speed of the connection device, a switching circuit guiding the connection device to the speed detection circuit 36 until the connection device is switched so that access to the network node is permitted and a processor 32 controlling the switching circuit, depending on a data transmission instruction and permitting the access of the connection device to the node 18.
