PURPOSE:To produce a lightweight steel sheet for can, excellent in resource recycling property as well as in various properties, by using, as a material for a steel sheet for can, a cold rolled steel sheet reduced in impurity content and applying various surface treatments to the surface of the steel sheet. CONSTITUTION:An as-cold-rolled steel sheet, which has a composition consisting of, by weight, <0.004% C, 0.02-0.10% S, <0.2% Al, <0.008% N, 0.09-1.0% Mn in the range satisfying Mn%/S%>=3, P by an amount in the range satisfying $%/P%>1, and the balance Fe and also has a structure in which the ratio (crystalline grain axial ratio) of major axis to minor axis in a crystalline grain of the steel sheet is regulated to >=4 on the average by controlling finishing outlet temp. at hot rolling, coiling temp., draft at cold rolling, etc., respectively, is used. An Sn plating film is formed on the surface of this steel sheet, or a chromate film, a phosphate film, a chromium plating film, and a chromium hydrated oxide film are formed on the Sn plating film, and a resin film is further formed at least on one side. By this method, the surface treated steel sheet for can, excellent in strict drawability, drawing and ironing property, corrosion resistance, etc., and having superior recycling// property as an iron source, can be produced.
