This new organopolyarylsilane, which is soluble in organic solvents, contains an aromatic segment (1), composed mainly of an aromatic fused ring structure as a skeletal portion, and an organosilane segment (2), bound to each through randomly distributed Si-C linkage groups. (1) is derived from pitch which is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, toluene, xylene, tetrahydrofuran. The organopolysilane has a number-average molecular weight of 500-10000 (pref 600-4000). The organopolyarylsilane can be produced by thermal decomposition of a mixture of polysilane and pitch in an inert atmosphere. It can be produced efficiently by the gas-phase reaction of a low-boiling component produced by the thermal decomposition of starting polysilane with a low-boiling fraction obtained from pitch, followed by recycling to a liquid phase. The fibres are produced by spinning the organipolyarylsilane, rendering it infusible, and baking it at high temperature in an inert atmosphere.
