The vertical support comprises two rails (8,9) displaceable relative to each other across their longitudinal direction. An adjustment device (11) comprises two relatively displaceable parts (12,13) of which one part (12) is attachable to the upper end of the first rail (8) and the other part (13) is attachable to the upper end of the second rail (9). The two parts have interacting detent mechanisms (14,15) which can be brought to engage with each other by a screw (16) which presses the two parts together and is guided through an oblong hole (28) in one of the parts. One part (12) can be made of a pliable plastics and the other part of a hard plastics.
