PURPOSE: To avoid frequent repeated shift change by identifying a running condition excessively large relative to a running resistance in which a rapid change in transmission gear ratio is present so as to suit a selected transmission gear ratio to a running resistance with traction force. CONSTITUTION: A group of transmission gear ratios preadjusted before a transmission gear ratio control part 27 is operated are filed in a memory. During the operation, a transmission gear ratio preadjusted by an automatic function part 32 or a manual function part 33 is selected, and adjusted by a transmission through an adjusting function part 31. Next, if an identifying device 40 identifies before a shift down is requested that it cannot maintain a running speed though a throttle valve distance is large and, after additional shutdown, an internal combustion engine speed reaches near the maximum speed, a matching device 41 will be operated. The matching device 41 is formed so that an engine speed is maintained constant when a target transmission gear ratio is changed instantaneously. This matching is made until an actual instantaneously adjusted transmission gear ratio or a changed target transmission gear ratio nears a next lower transmission gear ratio. |
