The reverse rotation detection device uses a sensor for scanning at least one angular marking attached to the i.c. engine component, to provide a pulse signal, received by an evaluation stage, which also receives monitored engine operating parameter signals. The evaluation stage determines the relative spacing between the pulses of the pulse signal, for indicating misfiring, with subsequent suppression of the fuel injection and/or the ignition until the synchronisation of the system is re-established.
