PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniformly and quickly dye keratin fibers such as the hair by specifying the temperature and contact time of a water vaporcontaining gas in bringing the keratin fibers applied with a cationic direct dye-containing composition into contact with the gas. SOLUTION: Keratin fibers applied with a dye composition containing a cationic direct dye (e.g. cationic triarylmethane dyes or cationic naphthoquinones) preferably in an amount of 0.05-5 wt.% based on the whole weight of the dye composition are brought into contact with a water vapor- containing gas at >=75 deg.C, preferably 85-150 deg.C for <2 min, preferably 1-10 sec contact time. Preferably, more than 1 vol % of the water vapor based on the whole volume of the water vapor-containing gas is contained in the process. The contacting treatment with the water vapor-containing gas may be performed after applying the dye composition to the keratin fibers.
